Common Slingshot codes
P0562 System Voltage Low SERIOUS
The ECU sees battery/charging voltage below spec. Usual suspects: weak battery, failing stator/regulator or corroded battery cables. Serious — fix promptly or risk being stranded.
P0563 System Voltage High SERIOUS
Charging voltage above spec — usually a faulty voltage regulator overcharging the battery. Can cook the battery and electronics.
U0126 Lost Comm with Steering Angle Sensor (SAS) SERIOUS
Modules lost communication with the steering angle sensor. Classic after steering/alignment work without recalibrating the SAS. Stability control and ABS lights come on; ESP shuts off. Needs SAS recalibration (dealer Digital Wrench).
C0055 Steering Position / Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit SERIOUS
Fault in the steering position or wheel speed sensor circuit. On Slingshots it commonly appears together with U0126 after steering work — recalibrate the SAS and check sensor wiring.
P2135 Throttle/Pedal Position Sensor Correlation CHECK SOON
The two throttle position sensor signals disagree — a very common Slingshot code. Often fixed by cleaning the throttle body and connectors; persistent cases need a new TPS/pedal sensor.
U0100 Lost Comm with ECM/PCM CHECK SOON
Modules can't talk to the engine computer. Check battery voltage first (low voltage causes phantom U-codes), then grounds and the CAN bus connectors.
P0117 / P0118 Engine Coolant Temp Sensor Low/High CHECK SOON
Coolant temperature sensor reading out of range — sensor or wiring. Can cause rough idle, fans running constantly or poor cold starts.
P0217 Engine Overheat Condition SERIOUS
The engine exceeded safe temperature. Stop, let it cool, check coolant level, radiator debris and fan operation before riding again.
P0335 Crankshaft Position Sensor CHECK SOON
Crank sensor signal fault — can cause no-start or stalling. Check connector first; replacement is inexpensive.
P0500 / C1035 Vehicle/Wheel Speed Sensor CHECK SOON
Speed sensor signal missing or erratic — speedometer drops, ABS/traction lights. Inspect sensor and tone ring for debris or damage.
P0651 Sensor Reference Voltage B CHECK SOON
The 5V reference circuit that feeds several sensors is out of range — often wiring/connector corrosion. One bad sensor can drag the whole circuit down.
P0455 / P0442 EVAP Leak (Large/Small) MINOR
Evaporative system leak — the #1 cause is a loose or worn gas cap. Tighten/replace the cap, clear the code and see if it returns.
Golden rule: before chasing any electrical code, check battery voltage and grounds first — low voltage triggers phantom U-codes and sensor codes. And if the code appeared right after steering or alignment work, start with the SAS recalibration (see our Wheel Alignment Guide).
Error Codes — FAQ
How do I read error codes on a Polaris Slingshot?
Use the digital gauge's diagnostics/DTC menu (the exact path varies by model year — check your owner's manual), or plug a standard OBD-II reader into the diagnostic port. Write down every code before clearing anything.
Why do U0126 and C0055 appear after an alignment?
Because the steering angle sensor (SAS) lost its zero reference. After any steering or alignment work the SAS must be recalibrated with the dealer's Digital Wrench tool — until then, stability and ABS lights stay on and ESP is disabled.
Can a weak battery cause error codes?
Yes — low system voltage is the #1 cause of phantom codes, especially U-codes (lost communication). Always verify the battery reads 12.6V+ and the terminals are clean before diagnosing anything else.
Can I clear codes myself?
Yes, with an OBD-II reader — but write the codes down first. If a code returns after clearing, the underlying problem is still there and needs a real fix.
Is it safe to keep riding with a check engine light?
Depends on the code. Voltage (P0562), overheat (P0217) and SAS/ABS codes (U0126, C0055) are ride-limiting — address them before riding hard. EVAP codes (P0455) are minor.
